White Chapel Station, London

For some considerable time, Kite Glass has been manufacturing and supplying, architectural and structural glass for use in rail stations in infrastructure projects. Recently, we have supplied Heat Soaked toughened laminated glass for Crossrail projects including Custom House, Nine Elms and Whitechapel stations. All three stations have been undergoing major expansion and modernisation works to allow for integration with London’s new Elizabeth Line.

The latest estimated costs for completion (2021) of the BDP designed Whitechapel Station is now £659 million and includes the construction of new shafts and platforms for the Crossrail tunnels, an elevated station concourse which will also act as a bridge and a new ticket hall. There will also be a new public square at the northern end of the station providing pedestrian access to Whitechapel High Street. Additionally, within the station there will be floor-to-ceiling glass screens to provide protection from the wind as trains approach.

We provided specialist structural glass with SentryGlas® interlayers for many parts of the station, including canopies and screens along with screen-printed signage.

These included:

• 300m2 of 21.5mm, clear Heat Soaked Toughened Laminated glass,
• 30m2 of 17.5mm clear Heat Soaked Toughened Laminated screen-printed glass,
• 50m2 of 37.78mm Clear Heatsoaked Toughened Laminated, with Structural SentryGlas® interlayers and screen-printed barcode bands,
• 50m2 of 33mm Clear Heatsoaked Toughened Low Iron, with structural SentryGlas® interlayers and screen-printed barcode bands.

All of the above are CNC polished.
